A few words before the travel begins
Eulerr.com in collaboration with Ohmyinterface.com decided to find banks with the best UX/UI all around the world.
We have analyzed the banks from Forbes Global 2000 list and enriched the list with banks from separate countries which weren’t mentioned.
Together, we will visit 24 countries at all and more than 800 banks’ sites.
China, India, USA, Russia, Europe, South Africa, Turkey and others.
The research is important because
- the banks are extremely conservative in everything. So the changes appear really slowly.
- There is an opinion that from one region to another there are lots of differences. You can often hear something like:
“buying patterns in different countries are different”
- The trandmakers are USA and Europe. Can other countries keep up with them?
This is the next article about best bank sites’ UI / UX from all over the world. First article (!!! Read it before starting this one!!!) was about the projects from Asia and Oceania. I felt very enthusiastic about the region but the only cool guys were Australians.
Let’s pay attention to Europe’s digital banking projects!
When you come to Europe, it seems there is nothing changed for centuries. These old streets, churches, family restaurants makes you feel nostalgy.
Of course, digital projects made in Europe are the most modern and popular ones.
The United Kingdom
When it comes to the UK the first thing that comes to mind is
All those banks are the mastodons founded in the middle of 20th sentury. Although, the level of digital sphere is quite high. The are not in the top of web design trends, but they are modern enough!
Just look at them!
HSBC is a respectable bank. The site is really easy to use and client-oriented. The user experience improvement never stops! When you use the site offering surveys asking to evaluate the current user experience and improve it appear constantly!
Works amazingly with the target audience, successfully implementing the “One bank for the whole life”conception.
Barklays is also cool!
For all the bank UX/UI developers it’s necessary to study those sites.
What is the digital bank?
Besides those monsters existing for nearly 100 years the digital banking sphere is developing rapidly.
Digital banking — is when the bank looses it’s branches, existing in the web only and interacting with youth mostly.
Great Britain’s digital banks:
The oldest of digital banks, which was founded in 1999 года. It’s UX is not interesting at all.
The bank bade specially for youngsters from 8 to 18. Interesting case for young people especially from the UX side. Main communication tool is a mobile app — not the website.
I haven’t used this service by myself but a feedback is nice. I suppose that this form of banking will be very popular in all of the developed countries.
This is more a digital company than a bank, because Tandem do not open the bank accounts for the majority of customers for now. In August 2017 the Tandem was accuired by the Harronds Bank. To conclude, this resource is very nice landing for teenagers — nothing more.
Monzo Bank and Atom Bank for a dessert!
First of all, this is not bank but mobile applications! Surely, they have a web landing but the the project is worthwhile because of nice applications!
Here is the app of Atom Bank:
If you notice challenger banks have a landing page that collects leads, and the rest of it is the app. Follow the link to find a few banks that have started or plan to start in the near future, but which were not included in the review.
Speaking about Germany, first thing that comes in mind is Deutsche Bank. And this huge and old bank has incredible UX! I can not explain how such a colossal bank could be so flexible!
I know, you want something fresh and interesting. Here is the digital bank from Germany which will expand your horizons:
Nice landing and good app feedback
The most popular bank in Spain is, surely, the Banco Santander.
There is no doubts that this bank’s UI and UX are not as good as British and Germank banks have.
Besides the Banco Santander, there are lots of banks which are brave enough to try some non-standart interface decisions and conceptions.
These are huge bank groups that use funny video and a modern style!
Moreover, there is a bank which landing looks more like a work of art then a site of a financial institution!
Unexpectedly, Spain is extremely cool from the perspective of UX/UI in a banking sector.
I Love Italy! I’m there twice for a year on a holidays. Italy is the center of fashion, culture and art, however, banking sector is boooring! One of interesting sites is Widiba Bank.
I can’t say anything bad about them and UX or UI of theirs site but the words “No ordinary bank” make me scared.
In my experience, this trick is used when the rest things in product are bad.
The most interesting French banks’ UX / UI which comes from:
If a school of banking UI and UX would have existed those banks would be a good pupils!
There are also some French digital banks. In my opinion, they would also be a good pupils — not the perfect ones, but they can show something interesting:
Sweden and Estonia
The decision to pay attention to small countries as Sweden and Estonia may be unexpected. Nevertheless, believe me, they woth it, there are plenty of cool digital banking projects!
Estonia is the place where IT industry is the most important and huge one. This is the country where robots are able to deliver post to you, the country where you can get electronic citizenship by completing a form online.
Holvi — is the Estonian financial service for entrepreneurs. Their comments are something like:
“Digital banking from entrepreneurs to entrepreneurs. Holvi combines everything a modern entrepreneur needs in one digital business account. The useful built-in business apps like paperless bookkeeping and invoicing will help you to focus on your core competences again. Let Holvi do all the daunting tasks and be a Maker and Doer again. “
The Estonian enterpreneurs
I have tested the service personally and I am convinced that it is brilliantly done! Recommended for all of you!
Sweden also hits the trends with amazing digital bank S’banken. In my perfect world, that’s how Scandinavian digital design should look like!
S’banken is a digital bank with one branch, this project is the part of huge financial company Skandia
European digital banking sphere is developed much better than in Asia and Oceania. The existance of Challenger Banks makes mastodons of banking spheres move towards innovations. And the projects from Seden and Estonia show that the level of UI / UX is not affected neither by country’s size nor population!
We can see by our own yeys how the new class of banks appears and this fact makes my heart beats faster! They are improving from month to month giving customers the best User Experience and Service.
In our next article we will find out what’s going on in USA!
