Eulerr is a platform where the client can choose an experienced software development team led by professional project managers under transparent management process. When we were that close to the release we decided to start context advertising. The result was more like paying money for nothing: as the outcome was very close to 0 and traffic did not generate any leads at all. The next coming idea was to advertise ourselves by content production. Why? As the project was built by a team of professionals each one of us can contribute and share experience. To get the first results there needed a lot of energy and effort this is why we decided to post as much information about us as possible at various startup marketplaces. There was a hypothesis that the core of our customers are start-ups, and start-uppers are the main audience of Producthunt and similar resources.
The first attempt was to show up at start up platform and we paid 30 $ for accommodation, received 0 requests and almost 0 traffic. This did not stop us and we began to prepare for the release of the product at Producthunt. We decided to go through various tutorials and finally started the campaign by registration of the whole team 2 weeks before the publication to follow Producthunt contributors registration procedure. Our team began to give upvotes to other projects and products for the sake of mutual upvotes and to look arount the marketplace. Eulerr.com was under development at the same time so the marketing was more like a side project at that time. The development was on its peak when Denis, the founder, found a list of top producthunters and actually contacted 50 of them. The first ten of them have received emails with unique text, but then Denis understood that it is a big numbers theory, so he used reply.io for the mass mailing. Sometimes the funnel does not work, only recipients with unique replied. They were Kevin and Ben. We were lucky enough so one of them agreed to hunt us and the other one refused.
When Eulerr.com interface was ready, we mailed Kevin the second time asking to hunt us. He told us the nearest date, it was Monday, we gladly agreed. Denis’s assumption was the following: most of our supporters live in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk, while in the US there will be night, the community can vote for us. By the time the States wake up, we will be at the top of the listed products. The probability of becoming an application of the day according to Denis predictions in this case was higher.
Our perception was justified exactly by half. In the morning we started very cheerfully, Denis posted a call to action adveret at FB and the upvotes number began to grow like mad. Very fast we began to be the fifth in the rating and then began to be the third. When the whole American society wakes up about 3 p.m. MSK we became the product of the day, we obtained the first line in the list. But something went very wrong. Part of the supporters who upvoted the project, arranged a flashmob and began to post Cyrillic reviews under the product’s article with description. The number of such reviews raised up to 20! One of the commentators did not like these reviews and he doubted their relevance. And he was absolutely right. The reviews were written by Eulerr.com supporters for the sake of laughter, among them there were certainly customers, but certainly not 25 of them. Discussion with the first reviewer after a brief intercourse with a stranger came to naught and we were happily at the first place. But then a second reviewer appeared and wrote a negative feedback. That was a true loss for us as the community started to downvote Eulerr.com It must be mentioned that the Producthunter who gave us a negative feedback said very clearly that he has never used the product. Very relevant to the situation was Paternak’s phrase: I have never read, but I am judging.
Our mistake — we started answering. The whole thing turned into a terrible unpleasant discussion, which ended in the complete exposure of the service. It has received a lot of upvotes sadly. The revelation was that I had no right to attract supporters through the FB and call on them to vote. This is really mentioned in the Producthunt’s rules, please pay attention to this. Thus, absolutely good intentions turned out to be an absolute evil, an angry review was gaining the likes and in a few hours it became clear that we would not become applications of the day. What we want to note and what will be worth paying attention to future hunters:
- In the description of the project there is a restriction of X symbols, it’s very difficult to convey the essence, the main text should be written in the first comment. We were in a great hurry and in an agiotage, so we forgot to do it. This is a very big mistake!
- Give the opportunity to Producthunt’s users to try your product. Main problem is that Eulerr.com is a b2b service. However, if it is possible provide your audience with a trial service version.
- Read the rules carefully the, do not engage in discussions with explicit haters.
- Respect the Producthunt community rules. Here is our mistake, we called all our colleagues, business partners, family and friends for a vote. Therefore, the lesson was that you can declare, but you do not need to call. We address our apologies to the Producthunt community members who might be reading the article now.
Lucky hunting for everyone and check out Eulerr at Producthunt.
